Juicin’!
January 27, 2013 in Juice, Recipes
So recently I learned that Tim Shafer (of Double Fine) has started a vegetable juice diet in order to lose weight. In four weeks he’s lost 25lb. That’s pretty damn good going! I had a read through his posts here – http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/8424/ – and was inspired enough to give this a try. I’m not going to go full ‘nothing but vegetable juice’ because Jaco doesn’t want to do it (despite my encouragements!) so I’ll probably do something that’s ‘mostly juice with some solid here and there’.
I bought the Russell Hobbs Juice Sensation. It’s the only one I could find locally – of four large stores I tried, only Woolworths had a juicer and this is the only one they had. Fortunately it looks like it’s a pretty decent one, and I’ve got faith in Russell Hobbs as a brand.
On the way home we went vegetable shopping:

Fresh mint, beetroot, carrots, grapefruit, small tin of coconut milk, lemons, carrots, ginger, pears, apples, tomatoes, spinach, all sorts. I’ve converted the laundry basket lid into a fruit & veg basket, and when we got home, I unpacked the Juice Sensation (such a cheesy name…) and made my first juice;
Ingredients:
3 large carrots
Handful of cherry tomatoes
1 apple
2cm ginger
tiny bit of onion (not a huge fan but wanted to try it)
1/2 raw beetroot
Handful of spinach (the large, rough-leaf variety)
2 inches of cucumber
It’s pretty damn tasty. I can’t believe how fast the juice came out (that’s what she said) and how fast it shredded up the veggies. I didn’t skin anything, put the apple and carrots in whole – it just ploughed through ‘em. The juicer book came with a couple of recipes for using the pulp (one for carrot cake and one for orange muffins) but otherwise I might use the pulp as compost for my garden.
So yeah, let the juicing commence! Anyone want to try this with me? I’ll post all the recipes I try here. My mum’s a big juice fan (she’s not following a juice diet, she just likes juicing) and has some recipes for me so I’ll post those too).
